Item Description
See previous item #2008 for background information. This is a large 23x35" sheet w/pair of illustration and text panels (facing opposite directions) each 7.5x12". The text panels were written by Sendak for inclusion w/portfolio and include his thoughts on his own development as an artist, most notably his shift in focus from the European masters to taking inspiration from his own childhood roots in American popular culture, typified by 1930s Mickey Mouse and Busby Berkeley, major influences on his then recently released "In The Night Kitchen." At the end of the text, beneath his printed name, he signed his full name in ink. In addition, beneath the illustration he again signed his full name in ink. He also has written "Intro" in ink on the blank reverse. The proof sheet also has three lines of very small type. These read - "Illustration From Lullabies And Night Songs - Copyright 1965 By Maurice Sendak" and (referencing our previous item) "The Repeat Pattern Covering The Front Of This Portfolio Is Made From One Section Of The Endpaper Design For Hector Protector And As I Went Over the Water." Sheet has numerous lt. handling creases but visually of almost no consequence. The margin edge below the first text panel has short and lt. diagonal creases of about 3" on the corner tips. Proof sheet will frame to essentially Mint appearance. From the Hake Collection and comes with COA.
