Item Description
Richard Merkin (1938-2009) enjoyed much acclaim as a painter, illustrator, writer, and educator. Merkin's works reside in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum among others. He was a regular contributor to the New Yorker, Harper's, GQ, The New York Sunday Times Magazine and contributing editor to Vanity Fair. This large and impressive 33x77" oil on canvas painting by Merkin features central image of pajama-clad man in bed w/typewriter at his side as he talks on telephone. Donald Duck stands to the right, watching him. Headboard appears to be stacked w/either books or boxes, one being labeled "1946," though we are unsure of the significance of this date. Nightstand at left has potted plant and another stack of books/boxes. Painted in 1986, upper right has "Merkin" signature and reverse of canvas has text by the artist in marker pen including title, size, and "O/C 1986 R. Merkin." Condition is Exc. and the images are visually fascinating. Very conservative opening compared to prices for his work in galleries.
