Item Description
3.25x5-3/8" nice quality matte finish real photo postcard. Shows full figure image of five team members in uniform: A.D. Creacy, Willie Wells, Eddie Watts, Elmer Wilson and Willie Bobo. Has hand written information on top/bottom margins, done at the time, noting team name and year of "1925" along with player names and positions. Mounted to a scrapbook page and as such has heavy and obvious wear. Small corner pieces missing from bottom left and top right. Visible crease lines, some with trace of aging and .5" tear at top center. Overall just Fair but image remains largely unaffected and with nice clarity. Wells joined the Stars in 1924 making this an early and historic image, the earliest Wells image we know of. He played with the team until 1931 and during his time on the Stars the team won three pennants in a four year period. He helped establish the Stars as one of the great dynasties in Negro League history. He ranks among the all-time Negro League leaders in doubles, triples, home runs and stolen bases. Wells was inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 1997. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
