Item Description
United Press dated “4/28/52”. 7-1/8x9” glossy has nice image of both players in civilian clothes packing suitcase. Bottom has attached caption noting they were loaned to Japan pro baseball team by Brown’s farm organization; “Both Have Played With Birmingham Black Barons And The Chicago American Giants”. Reverse side has United Press International ink stamp. Photo bottom has lt. rippling from caption being glued into place, otherwise Exc. This historic photo marks the first time Major League players were sent to play on a Japanese baseball team, thus making Newberry the first black pitcher in Nippon pro ball. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
