Item Description
First button is 7/8" and not used as part of a newspaper prize winning contest but rather simply to promote the strip in the sponsoring paper with text "The L.A. Examiner Barney Google." Back paper by Bastian. c. 1920s. Rare and Mint. The other seven are 1.25" and the object was to match the serial number on the button to one printed in the newspaper to win a prize. All but Popeye have their back papers. From the "New York Sunday American" are Barney Google and his horse Spark-Plug plus Margy. From the "New York Evening Journal" are Ella Cinders and Popeye. From the Buffalo Evening News" is another Ella Cinders. From the "Newark Star-Eagle" is Tailspin Tommy. NM to Mint examples. From the Richard Merkin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
