Item Description
8x10" original nice quality matte finish photo w/photographers mark at lower right "J. E. Miller KC." Shows 18 team members on ball field w/empty stadium in the bkg. The true highlight of the photo is a young Cool Papa Bell who stands in the back row third from the right. His uniform is without any team markings, all others are shown in matching "St. Louis" jerseys w/stars on left sleeves. Other players include George Scales, Bob Fagan, Bill Drake, Sam Bennett, Dimp Miller, Branch Russell, Dan Kennard, Dudley "Tullie" McAdoo, Joe Hewitt and Logan "Eggie" Hensley. Great team pose with much signage in the bkg. Inked date of "1922" has been added to bottom margin. Photo has been professionally relief mounted and framed to overall size of 15.5x17.5". Shows just a trace of margin wear upon close inspection, totally bright and clean overall. Bell's rookie year in the Negro Leagues was 1922 when he joined the Stars as a pitcher. He played with that team until 1931 when the team discontinued operations after their championship season. His career is as storied as any player in the Negro Leagues and he is one on the game's greatest players. He was inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 1974, well ahead of many of his peers. 1922 was also the year the team became the Stars, existing previously as the St. Louis Giants from 1906-1921. An incredibly historic photo at the dawn of not only a franchise but the career of a true legend. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
