Item Description
6.5x10" photo on a cardboard mount has been professionally relief mounted and framed. Applied to the bottom margin of the photo and done contemporary to the piece is a typed text strip detailing the game. A bit of text is missing but starts with "Perfect Day-Santop At Bat" followed stat of him having five hits including three home runs. Second line of text reads "Atlantic City, NJ---Phila Gts VS Brooklyn Gts. June 19th-1911." Image is of Santop in batting stance and awaiting the next pitch while behind him is Gus James, catcher for the Brooklyn Giants. Both players have their names added in ink, again, done at the time of the photo. In the bkg. is a sparse crowd in the stands. Photo has obvious aging, margin wear to the mount, 1" piece missing at lower left corner. Image of the players is fairly sharp. Overall still Good and displays nicely as framed. A rare image of Santop early in his Negro League days. His debut in the league was in 1909 with the Philadelphia Giants. In 1911 he only played part of the season with that team before moving onto the New York Lincoln Giants. He was one of the league's earliest superstars and one of the game's great home run sluggers. He was elected to the National Baseball HOF in 2006. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
