Item Description
Much larger and even more impressive than other Jorge S. art, this piece is 13.5x22.5" thin art board w/fully painted art which is signed at lower right. Hand painted title at the top in Spanish translates as "Jose Medez Throws The First Strike To Ty Cobb In The American Series At Almendares Park 1910." Art recounts a visit by the Detroit Tigers for an exhibition series of games in Cuba between Nov. 10 and Dec. 5, 1910 (which also included the Philadelphia A's). In the first meeting between these two National Baseball HOF members, Mendez struck out Cobb. The dynamic image shows Mendez (playing for the Scorpions) having thrown a pitch, Cobby swinging and missing w/the ball ending up in the catcher's mitt. The stands are jam packed with spectators, who overflow onto the field itself along with players, stadium employees and others. Both Mendez and Cobb have additions inset portrait images at bottom. Other details include flags on to of the grandstand for Cuba, USA and Cuban League teams. The details of this piece are truly incredible. Among the nicest pieces of Jorge S. art we have seen and a favorite of Richard Merkin's as it ties in with the 1910 Punch card set that Richard was so passionate about collecting. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
