3.5" dia. by 7/8" deep c.1832 and quite possibly earlier. Thomas Halliday was a British die-engraver who established his own business making medals and tokens beginning in 1801. We found one snuff box by him in this same metal under glass style from 1824 but no other examples of the Washington design. On the lid top a 2.25" dia. brass rim holds a glass with horizontal full width crack over a beautiful lustrous high relief brass shell. The shoulder truncation has name in small raised letters "Halliday. S." Text surrounding the portrait reads "George Washington President Of The United States." Two small carbon dots near bottom. Lid top, left of the brass edge, has shallow flake 1/8" wide by 3/8" long. Underside of lid rim has one .25" hairline crack. Underside of lid has shallow spot of missing material .25x.5" long. Underside of base has very old 1.5" long piece of cellophane tape over a small paper strip with typed number "357-19" applied by an earlier owner. Rare. Julie Powell Collection.
