Item Description
The larger piece is 2" tall in brass with enamel paint on the front. The text is in German. At the center is a hand with fingers raised seemingly in the victory symbol. German text at top translates to "International Liberation Day." Each side of the piece carries flags of European nations. Below the hand are a few words in German along with a pair of symbols representing the military force of Nazi Germany. In addition to the pair of "SS" symbols the words translate to "Never In Europe." Below this is the text "Weimar-Buchenwald/11. April 1954." While the 11th of April was the day in 1945 when the camp was liberated by a detachment of troops of the US 9th Armored Infantry Battalion we don't know the significance of the 1954 date. Also this piece does not seem as old as 1954. This and the following item we think are probably commemorative pieces c.1980. The second piece is 1.75" tall with red enameling between enamel paint depictions of European flags and with the only text the word "Buchen/Wald" at center. On this piece the metal has a copper finish. Each has a mounted bar pin on the reverse. Both items are Mint and from the Marshall Levin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
