Item Description
11-7/8x16" mat has three openings, one for clipped title of the Nov. 11, 1991 issue of "The New Yorker" magazine, the other w/text block mentioning that Frank Zappa's 50th Birthday would be celebrated at The Ritz, which was owned by John Scher at the time. Center 6.25x7.5" opening contains original pen and ink art of Frank Zappa by noted underground comix artist Robert Crumb. Image area measures 3.5x4-7/8" and has Zappa's name underneath, hand-lettered by Crumb, who has signed and dated art "- R. Crumb '91" at lower right. While mat has faded w/age, art remains unaffected and displays Exc. As published, this art accompanied the text block from "The New Yorker" included w/art. Scher promoted Zappa's birthday celebration, which was a show known as "Zappa's Universe" and this art was given to Scher. Art appeared on Page 10 in the "Night Life" section. Back has "The New Yorker Magazine, Inc." copyright sticker. A wonderful display piece featuring a stunning depiction of the king of underground music rendered by the king of underground comix, truly a unique piece for these two legends. From the collection of John Scher, legendary concert promoter, producer and manager and comes w/COA signed by him.
