Item Description
13-1/8x22" artboard w/attached paper overlay and two separate acetate and one onionskin paper overlay (top overlay marked "U.S.S. Maine B-241") has original mixed media art depicting the main box lid art for 1967 Pyro Plastics model kit No. 6241-200 featuring the USS Maine, classified as an armored cruiser, best known for her catastrophic loss in Havana Harbor on Feb. 15, 1898. Sent to protect US interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain, she exploded suddenly w/o warning and sank quickly, killing nearly three quarters of her crew. While the sinking of the Maine was not a direct cause for the Spanish-American War, it served as a catalyst, accelerating the approach to a diplomatic impasse between the US and Spain. Art shows the ship at sea. Art is signed by A.J. Rudisill, an internationally-acclaimed artist whose original acrylic paintings of landscapes and seascapes have been exhibited at major galleries throughout the country. Earlier in his career Rudisill provided stunning model kit box art, such as this being offered here. Large image area measures 13-1/8x22". Art is NM and would look stunning framed. Impressive model kit art.
