Item Description
9.5x12" thin board w/fully painted art which is signed at lower left "Jorge S." Great scene of Ruth playing Jai-Alai, a ball game that originated in Spain's Basque region and is played in a three-walled court with a hard rubber ball that is caught and thrown with a cesta, a long, curved wicker scoop strapped to one arm. Title at top reads "El Pelotari Babe Ruth En El Palacio De Los Gritos De 1920." His opponent stands behind him and spectators are detailed in the bkg. Ruth tried his hand at this sport over the years during his visits to Cuba and this scene is documented to his 1920 visit to the island for a series of exhibition games between Oct. 30-Nov. 20. A wonderful image of "The Bambino" in a sporting atmosphere outside of baseball. Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
