Item Description
4.5x7.5" "Sporting Times" cigar trade cabinet card featuring the 1888 "League Champions" New York Giants baseball team. The production of this unique "one-card set" was based on a photograph by renowned 19th Century photographer Joseph Hall. All players are numbered and identified at bottom, including - Tim Keefe, John Ward, Mickey Welsh, manager Jim Mutrie, Buck Ewing, Roger Connor, Jim O'Rourke, etc. (for a full listing of players, see online). It is possible that this was intended to be a cigar-box label. Approximately 30 examples of this card are known, and all originate from a single find many years ago by legendary Americana dealer Rex Stark. All known examples, including the offered piece, have financial ledger notes on the reverse and a water stain in upper left corner. This example has a triangular piece off upper left measuring 2x2" and upper right corner also has 1" area of moisture staining w/7/8x.25" sliver off. Despite these issues, team image remains crisp and clean aside from small spots of red paint on player 13, Connor. This is a fascinating card and arguably, because of the find of these many years ago, one of the great values of all 19th Century baseball team and advertising cards.
