Item Description
Lot contains 12 letters, two pieces of original art, one fabric sample, prototype patch/emblem and one store shelf talker. Most letters are typewritten on sheets averaging 8.5x11”. LETTER #1- “Chicago Embroidery Company “ letterhead dated Dec. 3, 1954 sent to “Tatum-Laird Inc.” Letter mentions enclosure of “Revised Sketch of the Space Cadet Emblem” in exact size and colors, and cost of “16¢ Each in Quantities”. ORIGINAL ART is on vellum sheet w/color pencil original art showing 2-7/8” dia. emblem FABRIC SAMPLE is loose 4x4.75” fabric swatch. LETTER #2- “Recco Maid Embroidery Co.” letterhead dated Dec. 3, 1954. Letter mentions enclosure of “Large and Small Sketch of Emblem Discussed” and cost of 15¢ each, and 10¢ for small one. ORIGINAL ART is vellum sheet w/lead pencil images showing 2” dia. and 3” dia. emblems. LETTER #3- “Tatum-Laird Inc.” letterhead dated Dec. 8, 1954 addressed to “George E. Morgan The Wander Company.” Letter is titled “Captain Midnight- Secret Squadron Emblem” and mentions fan mail letters from CBS w/request for emblem “The Kids Call Them ‘Patches’”, addresses of both embroidery companies, noting prices are “Lower Than Some Estimates Of What Patches Might Cost”. LETTER #4- Oct. 12, 1955 typewritten carbon copy letter to National Emblem mentioning consideration of a 2-1/4” dia. cloth emblem to be “Used As A Premium Which Would Tie In With Our Television Show Captain Midnight”. Has attached printed sheet dated July 26, 1955 from National Emblem promoting their premium patches noting “Popsicle” and “Dell Comics”. LETTERS #5,6,7 (AND PROTOTYPE PATCH)- “Jerry Scanlon Inc” stationery. First is dated Oct. 19, 1955 mentioning glassine packet. Second sheet is dated Oct. 26 and has typewritten instructions w/pencil corrections for emblem. Third sheet has pencil text “Phoned Changes 10/28/55” and has attached actual peel off PROTOTYPE cloth patch in cellophane sleeve as issued w/loose printed instruction paper w/corrections in pencil and loose corrected instructions paper. Actual patch as issued had this text on peel off paper backing. LETTER #8- two stapled sheets dated Oct. 25 titled “Tatum-Laird, Inc. Conference Report #175” for client “The Wander Company” noting how emblem will be attached to jar, six to eight week production time for “3,000,000 Jars” and detailing TV commercials. LETTERS #9, 10, 11, 12- four sheets paper clipped together dated from Oct. 17 to Oct. 25 (two on Jerry Scanlon letterhead) noting amount ordered, total cost of “$47,490.00” for printing fronts and backs w/packaging, and letter noting a quantity of “1,500,000 Patches” with cost estimate of “$ 36,411.75”. A few letters have pencil notes and bit of oxidation here and there from original staples or paper clips. Most are VF/ Exc. Comes w/6x7” thin cardboard SAMPLE SHELF TALKER for store display w/patch image and text promoting “Free Secret Squadron Emblem With Each Jar of Ovaltine”. First we've seen in our 47 years.
