Item Description
17x26.5" artboard w/attached acetate overlay has original mixed media art depicting the main box lid art for Pyro model kit No. B257-150, "The Monitor And The Merrimac," depicting The Battle of Hampton Roads, often referred to as either The Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack (or Virginia) or The Battle of Ironclads, the most noted and arguably most important naval battle of the American Civil War. Fought over two days (March 8–9, 1862), in Hampton Roads, VA. where the Elizabeth and Nansemond Rivers meet the James River just before it enters Chesapeake Bay adjacent to the city of Norfolk. The battle was a part of the effort of the Confederacy to break the Union blockade, which had cut off Virginia's largest cities, Norfolk and Richmond, from international trade. Art shows the ships in close quarters, firing at each other, a blazing and sinking ship seen in bkg. Art is signed by A.J. Rudisill. Art area measures 12.75x26. Kit number written in red marker on acetate overlay at upper right. Left center margin has 3.75" tear, which is not that noticeable unless viewed closely. Acetate overlay has a corresponding crack and some chips at edge. Printing labels at top/bottom center. Art remains VF overall and would look stunning framed. Impressive model kit art.
