Item Description
First is 4 page small 7 x 12” newspaper like “Tract No. 8” issued by “Young Men’s Republican Union of the City of New York/ August 7th, 1860.” This is titled “Lincoln And Liberty!!” It is one of 10 issues issued between June 19th and October 2, 1860 by the same group that sponsored the lecture given by Lincoln at Cooper Union in NYC Feb. 27, 1860. That speech according to Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer was “the speech that made Abraham Lincoln President.” The tract has 3 small pieces off left side edge and small tears on right edge but is about 97% complete. Front top left has nice graphic of eagle with “Lincoln and Hamlin” ribbon in its beak. Below is a Lincoln quotation about “faith” and “duty.” Other text related to Jefferson’s views on slavery, Lincoln’s personal looks, Douglas vs. Lincoln and more. Back page is a chart comparing statistics of “free” and “slave” states to demonstrate the “blighting influences” of slavery referred to as the “peculiar institution.” At bottom right is small advertisement reading: Wide Awakes/ Can obtain the necessary information about uniform, &c, by applying to E. A. Mann 659 Broadway.” Worn, but Good. Second is campaign token issued early in 1860. It is 1-1/16” silvered brass with reeded edge listed as DeWitt AL-1860-40. Obverse has club name “Hartford Wide-Awakes” showing member in uniform holding a cane and lantern. Reverse reads “Organized March Third 1860" showing uniformed parade marcher in oil cloth cape and holding a flaming parade torch. NM. Last is 1-15/16” pocket mirror with paper label on one side circa 1910. This reads: “Compliments of Hamly & Lease, The wide-awake expert FERROTYPERS / Touring the Globe” plus maker’s name “Ithaca Sign Works, Ithaca, N.Y.” The word “ferrotype” is most often associated with 1860-1880 campaign items but also applied to what came to be known as “tintype” photos produced by photographers traveling town to town and participating in fairs and carnivals. Light tone on outer edge of label. NM and only one we've seen.
