Item Description
4.5” tall with brass hanger for a name card, but no card present. Hanger joins symbolic yellow ribbon with word DELEGATE. Minor fabric ripples. Below is NM luster brass fob. Reverse reads: “Jubilee/Convention/N.A.W.S.A./1869-1920/Chicago” with small text below naming maker Chicago Badge & Flag Co. The fob front shows female figure representing Justice with her scales in balance and with Latin text “Jus Suffragii” which translates to “Right To Vote.” Much of the following background information was provided by APIC member and suffrage specialist Ken Florey. We recommend his 2013 book "Women’s Suffrage Memorabilia-An Illustrated History" for your enjoyment and profit available on his website: womansuffragememorabelia.com This Latin motto originated with the International Woman Suffrage Association set up in 1904 and headed by Carrie Chapman Catt. The group used the same motto for their newspaper name and their badge design, “borrowed” for use on this 1920 item, was originally designed by Mrs. Petersen-Den of Denmark. The Chicago convention of the N.A.W.S.A. ran February 12-18, 1920. While 36 states had not yet ratified the 19th Amendment, it was assumed that would soon happen (Tennessee did so 8/18/20 and Amendment became law 8/26/20) so the Convention spent much time transitioning the League of Women Voters, until then a committee of N.A.W.S.A., into the new full scale national organization with the goal of educating women voters. So, this Delegate badge was used at the last official suffrage convention. Historic and Rare.
