Item Description
This item was one of the highlights in the September 2013 historic sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection held in Philadelphia by Stacks Bowers. The item remains sealed in their clear plastic flip with sticker designating lot #10615 and it comes with a manila envelope as notated by Mr. Ford. The item is cataloged as DeWitt 1848-10 as well as Hake #3004 with a 2004 guide value in Hake of $13,000.00. The item traces its provenance back to the famous collections of Wayte Raymond as well as F.C.C. Boyd. The item is 2-1/16" in diameter (65mm). The item was described by Stacks Bowers as "About Uncirculated" with the single primary defect being a small loop missing from the top side edge. As this is the example from that auction we will quote that catalog description: "Color lithographs attributed to Currier & Ives by past catalogers, under glass. One portrait of Cass, the reverse featuring William O. Butler. Minor handling seen on the frame, along with a couple trivial pesting spots, barely noticeable. Fresh paper and Exc., thoughtfully devised color in the portraits. The glass is unimpaired and original, as the frame exhibits no evidence of tampering. What seems to have been a joining point for an integral loop is now a small edge void. There are only ten different catalog campaign medal types for the Cass camp in the election cycle of 1848. All are scarce and prized, but this is one of the great rarities of that shallow body of available items. It is also undoubtedly one of the most fragile and easily wrecked. These pewter framed pieces are the largest pieces and obviously, the only ones in the numismatic realm of Cass campaign pieces in full color. This format exists for other campaigns and is highly prized by collectors of political Americana for any candidate. However, as good quality Cass pieces are very few and far between this is certainly one of the highlights of the Ford Collection overall. The only sale record we are aware of is a similar quality piece that appeared at auction last year, and brought just over $7,700.00. This example in the Ford auction realized $6,462.00.
