Item Description
1-5/8" with 1/8" thick planchet. Front has his portrait and name with name along the bottom edge of the die-cutter "Leonard." Reverse floral wreath surrounds text "The Subtreasury & The Tariff Of Forty Six." As noted by DeWitt the originals from 1848 where struck in white metal and holed. This is one of the white metal re-strikes made around 1860. As DeWitt notes re-strikes in all metals (white metal, copper and silver) have a die break running through the inscription on the reverse. This is seen on the piece as a hairline running left of center within the wreath of roses. A few scattered and very shallow 1/16" marks on the obverse background but overall condition remains extremely Fine and with near full luster. A rare piece even as the 1860 re-strike. Don & Mildred Wright Collection.
