Item Description
3.5" with curl naming NYC maker Slater. Button has a little darker tone on the bottom rim first letter "M." All else displays Mint. This scarce and important civil rights button documents the March begun June 6, 1966 during which Meredith was shot by a gunman using a shotgun. This led to other civil rights activists deciding to continue the march in Meredith's name. Dr. King came from Chicago and SNCC's Stokely Carmichael was also there with Carmichael delivering his famous "Black Power" speech. This became a turning point in the civil rights movement with SNCC's "Black Power" philosophy now competing for attention with SCLC's "Freedom Now" non-violent philosophy.
