Item Description
10.25x14x9.25" tall tin litho base designed like a house w/built-in key has central shaft attached to inner wind-up mechanism. Shaft has attached 26" tall figure of "Jazzbo Jim," featuring the original composition upper body and molded composition head w/stuffed fabric legs/feet. Missing shoes. Figure has been re-dressed w/animal fur hair, new hat and new felt jacket. Figure appears to still be dressed in original cloth shirt and pants and holds original 15" long cardboard/wood/tin litho banjo, but tuning keys have been replaced. When wound, figures spins around in circles a bit hesitantly, but present on/off switch no longer functions, so figure continues to spin until motor winds down. .5" area by on/off switch has been replaced, but not too distracting. Face and hands have all over crazing and shirt has some age tanning. Banjo shows some aging. Figure still displays VF overall. Base is designed like house and features wonderful lithography that closely matches the art that appeared on the actual "Jazzbo Jim - The Dancer On The Roof" wind-up toy produced by Unique Art Mfg. Co. in the 1920s (see below). Original wooden feet on underside. Sides of house show stereotypical depictions of African-Americans including seated man playing banjo as children listen on long sides and stereotypical Mammy figure w/two children and chicken on ends. Lithography has all over aging and spider-webbing to surfaces and shows aging w/slight fade to roof, which has replaced and painted screws (w/repainted areas around screws). VG/Fine. Comes w/actual model of the toy, which has some noticeable differences as figure is all tin litho and base lithography features different (yet similar) illustrations on long sides of house. On/off switch is rusted and toy has scattered paint wear in the form of small nicks/scratches. Roof has been replaced. Wind-up feature no longer works. VG and just comes along and makes for great display w/the rare store display.
