Item Description
Lot of six 8.5x11" sheets and two smaller, one 7.25x10.25" lay-out board, two thin translucent 6.75x7" paste-up sheets (plus one for John Lennon but split down the middle) and 13 negatives in four envelopes. First item is tanned sheet w/two folds across lower half. Mimeographed copy of letter w/Seltaeb Incorporated New York letterhead at top and Feb. 19, 1964 date as well as signature of Seltaeb VP Malcolm G. Evans. Letter is addressed to C. Ray Randalll Manufacturing Co. Inc. of North Attleboro, MA. Letter states Seltaeb is "Granting To You The Sole And Exclusive Right To Manufacture And Sell Items Of Costume Jewellery [sic] In The United States Of America...Using The Name 'The Beatles' And Their Likenesses, Photographs, Facsimiles And Signatures On Said Costume Jewellery [sic] Relating To 'The Beatles'." Sheet holds clipped newsprint ad w/"Beatles Exclusive To C. Ray Randall!" headline plus notice "Infringers Will Be Prosecuted." Sheet also states minimum size of order. Next is 5.5x8.5" translucent sheet w/black ink original art images of four jewelry pieces, stock number and price per dozen. Next are three 8.5x11" sequentially-numbered sheets that have original ink art for 26 different designs and one incomplete design, also w/stock numbers/prices. Each was done on translucent sheet and then clipped and mounted to these sheets and has obvious glue staining on edges/corners. Many if not most of these designs went into production in early 1964 as we have seen many varieties of the finished products over the years. Next are three sheets, one stiff board and three translucent sheets (John Lennon was folded and split in two) w/mounted papers w/blocks of four or individually cut images of the groups or each Beatle. These have some fairly minor glue stains. Last are four envelopes holding negatives. All (except one set) were used to produce the paper images of the group or individual Beatles shown on previous items. These papers were then covered in celluloid and became inserts for the various jewelry items. Each measure 5x7", except for one smaller in third group. Each envelope has red pencil title at top. First reads "Beatles 5x7/4 In One." This holds two identical clean negatives showing all four Beatles in group pose. Second reads "Beatles Individual 5x7 Portraiture" and include facial close-ups. Tan stain on Lennon and McCartney. Third reads "Beatles Individual 7/8" and includes three negatives each w/vertical row of the same Beatle in circle w/"The Beatles" name above and that Beatle's facsimile signature below. One row per Beatle w/extra row for Lennon. Tan margin stains, but most images are clean. Last, w/Lennon and shown in our catalog photo, is titled "Beatles 70L (for Ligne, a printer's size measure) Individual" and includes four negatives, each w/six images of a Beatle. Each image is within 2-1/8" dia. circle w/"The Beatles" name above, facsimile signature below and 1964 date in Roman numerals. Brown stains on margins but 22 clean images and tan stain on two of Ringo Starr. We have not seen this Roman numeral version before and do not know if it was produced. A unique in-house group from one of the very earliest Seltaeb licensed Beatles merchandisers in the US. See Beatles buttons lots #1151-1153.
