This photo represents one of three different known Cuban League team premiums issued early in 1923 by the Cuban newspaper "La Discusion" (as text on bottom center indicates). All three are pictured on Cesar Lopez's website Cubanball.com under the "Team Cards" section. While it is obvious that this item is not an original "Type 1" photo, a premium distributed by a newspaper would have been mass produced and thus, a "copy" of the original photo, which is what this piece is. Regardless, it is still of the same vintage as the original. Addtional text notes date of Jan. 1923 and photographer F. Gilbert. Defects to the original print are evident on this "copy." This Cuban Winter League team is shown in uniform on ball field. HOF members include Martin Dihigo (who was 17 at the time and this is most certainly his first image as a professional player), John Henry "Pop" Lloyd and Cristobal Torriente. Other players of note include: Adolfo Luque, Mike Gonzalez, Rafael Almeida, all Cubans who played in the Major Leagues. Also shown are Cannonball Redding (in his Bacharach Giants sweater) and Pastor Pareda (in his Cuban Stars sweater). Tack hole top center, pair of staple holes top left.
