Item Description
6.75x29" Strathmore artboard has original pen and ink (w/blue pencil shading) art by legendary "Mickey Mouse" daily strip artist Floyd Gottfredson for Aug. 31, 1934 installment of "Bobo The Elephant" storyline in which Mickey and Minnie Mouse discuss bathing Bobo the Elephant (w/Mickey comparing it to washing a car), only to have Bobo run away. Strip features four panels in which Mickey and Minnie Mouse are seen in each, Bobo in two. Strip shows Mickey and Minnie w/Bobo, Minnie reading a book about elephants and telling Mickey about their bathing requirements. They then discuss how to do so in the second and third panels, contemplating if elephants use soap in the jungle or not. Last panel reveals Bobo has escaped from the yard, clearly in no mood to be scrubbed like a car. First panel has 1934 Walt Disney Enterprises copyright strip w/"Great Britain Rights Reserved" text. Third panel has "8-31" inked date and last panel has "Walt Disney" name signed by Gottfredson (Gottfredson not being allowed to sign his own name). Left margin has "Ben Day #509" designation in blue pencil. Pinholes at top corners. Artboard has some scattered lt. dust soiling and strip of aging along top margin, but art is o/w clean and Exc. This item was obtained by our consignor as a child in the 1950s and is new to the collecting community. This is the final piece of original "Mickey Mouse" daily strip art in his collection, w/two previously offered in our last auction. Rare and historic Disney art.
