Published in Nov. 1941 “New York Daily News” just weeks before Pearl Harbor. Art board has 14x21.5” image area in India ink, litho crayon, w/some blue pencil. Hand lettered caption at top reads “ World War II :Wake Up Uncle Sam. Look Who’s joined Our Little Party.”. Striking image has Uncle Sam titled “Uncle Sap” passed out at table as Lady Death representing war whispers in his ear and woman in low cut gown holds cocktail glass and bottle of “Old Liquidation”. Bottle of “Wine Of Youth” is on table along w/”The Bad News” stack of papers. Art is signed “C. D. Batchelor” at lower left corner and just above is ink inscription “ For Robert Boyle From One Student Of Public Affairs To Another. C. D. Batchelor Nov 1947.” Margin edges have lt. wear, image area has trace of lt. dust soil and aging, otherwise VF/Exc. Clarence D. Batchelor (1888-1977) was a political cartoonist for the “New York Daily News” from 1931 to 1969, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Wonderful example by one of top editorial cartoonists of the 20th century. From the Schechter Family collection.
