Item Description
Thin art board has 11.5x14.5” image area in litho crayon w/caption “Torquemada” based on Spanish Inquisition. Striking scene has henchmen w/ Sen. Gerald Nye seated in black robe pointing at movie producer and saying “I Accuse You Of Hating Hitler!” Signed “Rollin Kirby” at lower right w/”9-11-41” at bottom right. Margins have light age toning, image area will frame to Exc. appearance. Nye established the America First Committee which was concerned about Hollywood’s unfavorable depiction of Germany just before we entered WW II. Rollin Kirby (1875-1952), creator of “Mr. Dry” Prohibition figure, won the very first Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartoons in 1922, and won again in 1924 and 1928. Superb example.
