Item Description
c. 1882. Ornate archival mat has watercolor in center w/4-3/8x7” image area on thin blue art board. Elaborate scene has man w/large stovepipe hat wearing theatrical costume holding sandwich board w/handwritten letter “ Grand Theatre Leeds My Dear Earnest Will You Give Me A Call Tomorrow About 2. I Shall Be Very Glad To See You Yours Ever Phil”. Upper left has art of Mrs. Farrar w/large hand-lettered text “Wednesday”. Lower left has thin full figure of orator hand-signed “Phil May”. Lower left corner tip has small ink number “24 B”. Extreme margin edges have scattered age marks, image otherwise bright and Exc. Phil May (1865-1903) was an English caricaturist noted for his pen & ink art in Australia’s “The Bulletin” as well as England’s “The Graphic” and “Punch”. A superb example of his watercolor work.
