Item Description
Published in March 14 “Punch” and “Phil May: The Artist And His Wit”. Archival mat has thin art board w/7x11.25” India ink image area. Doorman is greeting well-dressed man w/cigar. Hand-lettered caption reads in part “ Would You Like A Four Wheeler Or A Ansom Sir?” w/answer “(Indescribably) Ver’ Mush Oblige-But- Reely Don’t Think I Could Take Moi”. A few text lines crossed out by the artist, image area clean and Exc. Phil May (1865-1903) was an English caricaturist noted for his pen & ink art in Australia’s “The Bulletin” as well as England’s “The Graphic” and “Punch”. A superb example of May’s pen work.
