Item Description
Published in “Phil May’s Sketchbook 50 Cartoons”. Published by R H Russell/NY 1898. Mat has center opening w/10x 14” India ink image area on heavy art board. Man w/drink smoking pipe is seated on bench w/mug of ale nearby in front of “Inn” w/“I.O.S.T. Lodge” parade approaching. Art is signed in ink at lower right “Phil May/93-“. Bottom front of mat has ink caption by the artist, “Well I’m Glad They’ve Got A Fine Day For They’re Outin. But For My Part I Don’t Take Much Interest In It Myself.” w/bold “Phil May” signature. Trace of aging here and there, but otherwise Fine/VF+. Phil May (1865-1903) was an English caricaturist noted for his pen & ink art in Australia’s “The Bulletin” as well as England’s “The Graphic” and “Punch”. A superb example of May’s pen work.
