Item Description
Archival mat has 10.5x14.75” India ink image area in center w/well-dressed man seated w/newspaper and wife standing nearby. Signed in ink “Gordon H. Grant 1901” at lower right. Caption (Note: not here) reads: “Mrs. Newlywed: The Night You Proposed You Acted Like A Fish Out Of Water. Mr. Newlywed: I Was- And Cleverly Landed, Too.” Reverse side has “Dec 28 1901” ink stamp. Minor trace of aging at bottom, otherwise Exc. Gordon Grant (1875-1962) worked at “Puck” from 1901 to 1909, eventually going on to great fame as a marine artist w/paintings setting record prices. His “Old Ironsides” painting is in the White House and his work is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and the Corcoran Gallery in D.C. Superior example of his detailed early pen work.
