Item Description
Archival mat has 7x9.5” India ink image area in center w/highly detailed scene of King Edward Prince of Wales holding baton directing orchestra as they play “Royal College of Music” score. Individual members music has titles including “ Edinboro First Fiddle, Albany Second Fiddle, Canterbury”. Lower left has hand inked printed "Linley Sambourne" name, lower right is signed in ink “Linley Sambourne. March 27, 1882.” Reverse side has 11” tall lead pencil sketch of full figure man in animal costume holding baton. Front image area has a few trivial age spots around bottom, otherwise clean and near Exc. Comes w/photocopy of this art as published in March 11 issue of British humor magazine “Punch” w/caption “ Harmony; Or, The Prince of Wales Minstrels, Who Will, We Hope, Perform Out Of St. James Palace Hall”. Sambourne (1844-1910) did prolific work for “Punch” for 43 years. Superb example, ready to frame. From the Schechter Family Collection.
