Item Description
10.5x14" artboard has 8.75x12" acrylic image area depicting Popeye holding Olive Oyl, who has fainted watching as Swee'Pea feeds fish to giant leaping whale at "Marine Land Show." This art was used for the cover to Whitman's "Popeye Coloring Book" No. 1651 which was published in 1971. Production notations on tape strips at bottom margin. Original vellum overlay is attached at top w/tape, w/some strips of staining from aged tape at top margin. Overlay has "Popeye Coloring Book" title paste-over as well as Whitman logo and King Features Syndicate, Inc. copyright strip paste-overs. Overlay has margin wear and shows aging. Margins of artboard have staple holes and some small spots of moisture staining at lower left. Despite these issues, image area remains Exc. and would look wonderful framed. From the Whitman Archives.
