Item Description
c. 1910. 3.5x5.5" postcard has been trimmed to 2.75x4.5". While border is missing the full figure image of Poles holding a baseball bat is complete. Most printed text on reverse remains including much of the "AZO" stamp box. Reverse noticeably aged but unused. Center crease. Front has noticeable surface paper flakes and wear although more to bkg. than the actual image. The image remains sharp and bold. Only Fair but also the only example known. Images of Poles in general are rare and highly sought after. Referred to as the "Black Ty Cobb" Poles began his baseball career with the Harrisburg Colored Giants in 1906. In 1909 he joined Sol White's Philadelphia Giants. He also had several stints with the New York Lincoln Giants between 1911 and 1923. He is credited w/a lifetime batting average of over .400 against all competition. In the case of this piece, rarity trumps condition. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
