Item Description
3-3/8x5-3/8" w/great image of a youthful Judy wearing dapper attire. He was born in 1899 and this item dates to c. 1916 making him about 16 years old. At age 18 he began playing semipro ball and subsequently joined the Hilldale Stars in 1918. Johnson led that team to three pennants in a row from 1923-25. He played in the first Negro World Series in 1924. In 1929, Johnson was named the Negro leagues Most Valuable Player by the Chicago Defender and the Pittsburgh Courier. The following season, he became player-manager of the Homestead Grays. In 1932, he and most of the team jumped to the Pittsburgh Crawfords. He retired as a player in 1937 but went on to be a scout for several MLB teams. In 1954 he was hired as a spring training coach for the A's, responsible for working w/African-American players. He was inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 1975. Postcard is unused but has moderate aging to both front and back. Corner tip wear. Overall still Fine and image is sharp and bold. One of only two examples we know of (the other originated from Johnson's estate and sold at auction back in 2006 for $1,148). With no baseball cards for this HOFer, we offer this early and historic piece as an exceptional alternative. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
