Item Description
Thin art board has 4-3/8x17.75” India ink image area for Jan. 22 w/five panels. Nervous Barney is comforting stereotypical black jockey Sunshine in panel one as policeman tells him “If There’s Anybody Prowling Around The House I’ll Drill ‘Em Full O’ Holes”. Barney checks on things in his nightshirt and policeman reads paper when he’s startled by a Barney look-alike at window. Last panel has real Barney telling policeman “I Thought I Heard You Yelling At Someone-“. Signed in ink “DeBeck” in panel five. Complete w/King Features copyright label on front and lead pencil title “The Chief Shows Surprise” on top margin. Margins have trace of lt. dust soil, image area will mat and frame to Exc. appearance. Funny and well-drawn prime early example w/nice blue pencil shading. Schechter Family Collection.
