Published in the Winter issue of “Phil May’s Annual”. Archival mat has 7-7/8x10” opening at top w/India ink art of well-dressed couple enjoying champagne and conversation. Signed in ink “Phil May” at lower right. Mat has second opening at bottom revealing 2.25x10” ink caption “Scene: Restaurant In The Strand. The Major (To Celebrated Music-Hall Artiste): By Jove Miss Dashwood I Really Believe You Could Play Ophelia As Well As Any Of ‘Em.”. C.M.H.A. “Yes, And I’ve Got A New Reading Of That Part. She Wasn’t Mad, You Know; She Was Boozed.” Signed in ink “Phil May”. Art image area has trace of minor age toning at edges, otherwise VF. Caption is trimmed a bit unevenly w/lt. wear at right. VG. Phil May (1864-1903) was a British cartoonist and caricaturist who worked for “Punch” and other publications as well as the “Sidney Bulletin” in Australia . Nice twice signed example of his pen work.
