Item Description
The Popeye Model Navy was developed as a 1930s premium that included several cut-out cardboard ships that were to be available on product packaging. Offered here are seven pieces of onionskin paper, six w/lead pencil and one w/mixed media prototype original art for signs, packaging, the premium ships themselves and associated materials. Sheets measure between 18x20.5" and 19x23.5". Five sheets feature similar images of Popeye presenting the premium. These sheets show special accordion-fold folder that was designed to fit around package; product box (marked "Quick Arrow Soap Flakes") showing cut-out elements of premium on back of box; two-sided theater circular, one side w/Popeye portrait, the other showing "Scale Models Of Popeye Model Navy" including one ship noted as "The Battleship Pennsylvania" and note that series included 40 ships; another sheet shows folder w/Pennsylvania ship noted again; final sheet featuring Popeye shows "Popeye Model Navy Display Counter" store display w/hand-lettered Popeye word balloon reading "Ahoy Boys & Girls - Get A Popeye Model Navy - These Boats Yam 22 Inches Long And Float In Water." Popeye is depicted w/battleship. Other two sheets that do not feature Popeye include on sheet showing four different ship images, including "Battleship, Cruiser, Destroyer, Aircraft Carrier." Other sheet features extremely detailed image of battleship, which has been nicely colored and is depicted complete w/American flag. All sheets have one or more fold lines and scattered edge tears w/some pencil rubs. Sheets are VG to VF, but art remains distinct and VF overall. An extensive and unique lot for the Popeye collector. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold and comes with LOA.
