Item Description
14x25.5" frame contains two Western Union telegrams, both from National Baseball HOF player/manager/executive Branch Rickey (1881-1965), best known for breaking MLB's color barriers by signing African-American player Jackie Robinson and for drafting MLB's first Hispanic superstar, Roberto Clemente. Telegrams are to fellow HOF member Ralph Kiner (1922-2014), record-breaking home run hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians. Negotiations are dated between March 12-14, 1953 and deal w/salary dispute (which saw Rickey trade Kiner to the Chicago Cubs later that year when a resolution couldn't be reached). The foundation of this dispute arose when Kiner accuses Rickey of backing out of a promised pay raise when Kiner achieved the NL home run title. Rickey's irritation is evident in the increasingly heated exchange captured in this display. First telegram mentions Rickey's offer not being to Kiner's liking and thus being withdrawn. After this, Rickey states Kiner told the press he was accepting the withdrawn offer. Rickey then notes some details of terms in a letter from March 6, urging Kiner "Suggest You Read Last Paragraph Again." Aged piece of tape at bottom right. VF. Kiner responded on his personal stationery, writing in pencil  to confirm what Rickey had offered. Kiner has printed his name below. Left margin has 2.5" irregular vertical tear that affects some text and right margin has moderate moisture staining. VG. Kiner's response is followed up by secretarially written to Kiner, noting in part "You Will Be Treated No Differently Than Any Other Player In This Club... If You Are Determined To Be a Hold Out Cause Of Special Privileges Then 'Hold Out' It Is... Any Effort Thereafter To Make Another Belated Acceptance Will Be Equally Useless." Aged tape reinforcement across top, not affecting text. Fine. Attractively double-matted under UV glass. Historic piece of baseball memorabilia. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
