Item Description
This lot spotlights Eloise (who lives in New York City's famed Plaza Hotel), the protagonist in a series of children's books written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight, first published in 1955. 7.75x10.75" Strathmore artboard features wonderfully detailed pen and ink original art w/watercolor highlights, image area measuring 4.5x6.5" depicting Eloise wearing "The Plaza" baseball jersey, ball cap, catcher's mitt and holding baseball in her hand while balancing a baseball bat on the tip of one foot. Her pet dog Weenie and turtle Skipperdee appear at her feet, both wearing catcher's masks (Skipperdee wears this over his shell). Art was created by Knight for and signed to fellow children's book author/illustrator Richard Merkin, the baseball theme catering to Merkin's love of the game. Art has been signed at lower left "For Richard Merkin From Hilary Knight 2004." NM. Comes w/handwritten letter from Knight, dated March 1, 2004, which thanks Merkin for book he sent and reads in full "Dear Richard, Well It Took Far Too Long!.. A Thank You For The Fantastic Stelhi Silk Design Book Including My Parents' Work.. Something I Treasure! Hope Everything Is Going Well For You. Best Hilary." NM. Lot also includes "Eloise - The Ultimate Edition" hardcover w/dust jacket published by Simon & Schuster in 1999. Knight has signed and inscribed on inside front cover. NM. Original art by Knight is very desirable and rarely comes to auction. Ex-Richard Merkin Collection and comes with COA.
