Item Description
King Vitaman was a brand of sweetened breakfast cereal produced by Quaker Oats and sold in the United States. The cereal entered the marketplace in 1968, and changed mascots several times. From 1971 until his death in 1977, actor George Mann, an ex-vaudevillian in the comedic dance act Barto and Mann, depicted King Vitaman on cereal boxes and in TV commercials. Offered here is a lot of transparencies featuring Mann as King Vitaman as well as original art for a proposed figural King Vitaman mug. Original "Job 6948" envelope contains "Color Transparencies Of King Vitamin [sic]" and these transparencies (measuring between 2-3/8x3" and 7-7/8x9-7/8") each show Mann in costume (complete w/spoon crown), featuring eight different outtakes from commercial shoots. These are evenly aged but Exc. overall. Comes w/photocopies of these transparencies that were used for design for King Vitaman mug. Package was put together by HMS Associates, founded in the late 1940s and based in Willow Grove, PA. Specializing in product development, HMS took their client's abstract ideas and converted them into "pattern prototypes" that could then be sent to tool companies who would copy them and make metal production molds. HMS performed services for a number of well-known toy/hobby companies, including Aurora, Ideal, Hasbro, Galoob, Remco and others. The transparencies were provided to HMS by either Quaker or their advertising agency, to be used as reference material. The large transparency is the actual image used on millions of King Vitaman cereal boxes in the early 1970s and for many years thereafter. Job packet includes four 11x16-7/8" sheets, two w/lead pencil original art of two views of "King Vitamin [sic] Drinking Cup" along w/production notations and 1973 date. Other two sheets of mimeographed and are marked "Color Notes," each featuring front image have been neatly hand-colored w/colored pencils/pastels. These sheets feature two different color varieties for a King Vitaman mug that was never produced. Sheets have some lt. aging and handling wear but are VF/Exc. overall. Unique lot. From the HMS Archives.
