Item Description
2.75x4-5/8" c. 1930 vintage glossy depicts Salazar along with Cuban Stars teammate kneeling in front of stadium seats. Three other Cuban Stars ballplayers are pictured in the background. Salazar showed his versatility by making several pitching appearances for the Cuban Stars while leading the team in batting with a .355 average in 1930. At the conclusion of that season, which saw the ball club finish in next to last place, the Cuban Stars left the Negro National League and played one season in the East-West League in 1932. Following that season, Salazar would join Alejandro Pompez' New York Cubans in 1935, teaming up with Martin Dihigo to form one of the best duos of two-way players in organized black baseball. Salazar was elected to the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954. Photo exhibits a 1.25" area of paper loss along the bottom front edge along with moderate corner wear and a couple of minor chips along the top and bottom edges. Back exhibits moderate staining along with "Salazar - Cuban Star" written in pencil and "58" stamped. Good. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
