Item Description
3-3/8x5-3/8" vintage matte postcard depicting four U.S. ballplayers who participated in the 1922 U.S. Baseball Tour of Japan. This club was known as the Herb Hunter All Stars and included four future National Baseball Hall of Famers, Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock, Casey Stengel and George "Highpockets" Kelly, who is pictured on this postcard, standing second from right. To Kelly's far right is Bert Griffith, next to him is Riggs Stephenson and to Kelly's left is Bibb Falk. Griffith had a very brief three year MLB career with Brookyln of the NL, finishing with a career .299 batting average. Stephenson, playing primarily with the Chicago Cubs, went on to have a much more descript career finishing with the 22nd highest batting average in baseball history at .336 along with 63 home runs, 773 RBI's and 714 runs scored. Kelly, who was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans' Committee in 1973, played primarily for the New York Giants, posting a career .297 batting average with 148 homers and 1,020 RBI's, leading the National League twice in that category, in 1920 and 1924. Falk, playing predominantly for the Chicago White Sox finished with a very impressive career batting average of .314 along with 69 homers and 784 RBI's. Postcard exhibits light staining around the borders on the back and remains unused. Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
