Item Description
6-1/8x9.5" matte paper premium depicting Cuban baseball great, Miguel Gonzales. This piece is part of a widely collected team set of St. Louis Cardinals ballplayers, best known for the inclusion of a Dizzy Dean rookie, pre-dating his earliest traditional card issues by two years. Gonzalez began his professional baseball career in Cuba during the 1910 season for Fe. During the 1913-14 winter league season, Gonzales was traded to Habana, beginning a long and storied career there. During the summer, Gonzales would begin his MLB career in 1914 with the Cincinnati Reds. After one season there, Gonzales would move on to stints with the Giants, Cardinals and Cubs. Upon retiring as an active player in 1932 while with St. Louis, Gonzalez would go on to coach for several more seasons, ending in 1940. Premium exhibits minor corner wear along with a light 1" creases in the upper right corner. Back is blank except for a small notation "1931" in the upper left corner. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
