Item Description
3.5x5.5" vintage matte postcard depicting 10 ballplayers in full uniform in a line on grass field. "Star Bloomer Girls Base Ball Club - 627 W. Michigan St. Indianapolis, Ind." printed text at bottom. Amelia Bloomer designed and wore the loose-fitting, Turkish-style trousers that carried her name and made sports more practical for women athletes. In the 1890s, scores of 'Bloomer Girls' baseball teams formed all over the country. There was no league. Bloomer Girl teams rarely played each other but 'barnstormed' across America, challenging local town, semi-pro and minor league men's teams and frequently won. The teams were integrated when it came to gender. Although most of the players were women, each roster had at least one male player. Team pictured here appears to have two male players. Postcard exhibits a few creases/surface wrinkles along w/moderate, even corner wear. Divided postcard back remains blank and unused, .75" piece of tape in the upper right-hand corner. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
