Item Description
3-3/8x5-3/8" vintage matte postcard depicts 18 ballplayers in full uniform along w/one gentleman in formal attire posed on grass field, likely on campus. "Varsity 1914" is etched into bottom of photo along w/"Lloyde" photographer credit. The Illinois ball club would win the Big Ten Conference championship in baseball for the 1914 season under long-time head coach George Huff. A year later, a little known freshman by the name of George Halas would join the team, becoming a three-sport star along w/basketball and his first love football, before going on to a HOF career in the early days of the NFL. Wonderful clarity of image is excellent, small spot of inking at lower right on front. Divided back has been postally used w/May 16, 1914 cancellation date. Corners exhibit lt., even wear w/3/8" corner crease at lower left. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
