Item Description
4.5x6" vintage thick cardboard team composite image depicting 18 team members of the 1935 Columbus Elite Giants of the East-West League. This team composite was neatly trimmed down from an oversize broadside poster produced that same season and picturing six of the top teams in Negro League baseball at the time, the Pittsburgh Crawfords, Homestead Grays, Chicago American Giants, Brooklyn Eagles, New York Cubans and the Elite Giants. Despite the strong competition, the Columbus team finished the season only one game below .500 at 16-17 during league play. Pictured prominently below the Columbus banner in full-length pose is team Manager Candy Jim Taylor, one of four famous baseball-playing Taylor Brothers of the Negro Leagues. Although we have not been able to positively identify everyone pictured, here is a listing of the 1935 Elite Giants roster - Jim West, Sammy Hughes, Leroy Morney, Felton Snow, Wild Bill Wright, Red Parnell, Zolly Wright, Nish Williams, Bill Byrd, Tommy Dukes, Bob Griffith, Pullman Porter, Red Wright, Sad Sam Thompson, Tom Glover and Speedball Willis. Some corner wear visible along w/a few full length horizontal creases. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
