Item Description
Scarce 2.75" long match safe by Cruver, Chicago. Side panels are blank. Main panels are sepia. One reads: "West Side Brewery Co-/Mundus Beer./Detroit, Mich." This fascinating relic was produced in honor of the Tigers back-to-back American League championships in 1907 and 1908 and displays images of 24 team members with identifications by last name below each portrait. This '08 Detroit Tigers ball club stormed through the American League season, finishing in first place with a record of 90-63 under National Baseball Hall of Fame player/manager Hughie Jennings. Leading the offense for the mighty Tigers was a pair of future Hall of Fame outfielders, Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford. 1908 marked Cobb's second full season in the big leagues and saw him win his second of a record 12 American League batting titles with an average of .324. Detroit would go on to lose the World Series to the Chicago Cubs in five games for the second consecutive year. Slight silver luster off the match striker end and age stain around the word "Mich." Opposite side with photos has narrow age spotting across the top and some much less noticeable across the bottom. Full gloss and Fine. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
