Item Description
See #708 for details. Rare. To the best of our knowledge, this button has never been offered individually at public auction. Christy Mathewson, along with Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and Walter Johnson, became one of the first five inductees to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, representing the inaugural class of 1936. Mathewson was the ace of manager John McGraw's New York Giants ball club from 1901 through 1914, winning 20 or more games for 12 consecutive seasons and 13 out of 14 with New York. Christy finished his career with a record of 373-188 and an ERA of 2.13 and 2,507 strikeouts. Matty would lead the National League multiple times during his career in wins, ERA, starts, complete games, shutouts and strikeouts.  Two small stains on the back paper. The celluloid is very slightly concave and there are four celluloid cracks: about .25" below "C" of "Pitcher", .5" below "E" of "Pitcher" going vertically down to right of his cap and ear, and between the green of the mound and the black of the photo circle a V -shaped pair with each arm about .25". Top edge has a few faint age dots as does edge from 7-8 o'clock. Moderate gloss. VG, but visually Fine. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
