Item Description
1-5/8x2.5" vintage pair of cardboard matchbox panels corresponding to the front and back of a complete matchbox depicting long-time Cuban baseball great, Manuel "Cocaina" Garcia. Front panel displays "Peloteros" prominently across the top along with a player portrait image in center and crossed baseball bats with baseball and player name at bottom. Back panel includes player's name again along with team name and brief Cuban baseball biography. Garcia began his professional baseball career in the U.S. Negro Leagues, playing for the Cuban Stars West in 1926. Cocaina would go on to spend 11 seasons playing Negro League ball before spending nearly the entire decade of the 1940s in Mexico, while traveling to Cuba during the winter, playing primarily for the Habana team. Both panels exhibit evidence of trimming as well as having been separated long ago from their original matchbox format with some scuffing visible on the inside of each panel. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
